HALF WAVE RECTIFIER

Updated: Mar 29, 2022

What is a half wave rectifier

Half wave rectifier is a device used for converting AC voltage to DC voltage . it is usually used for rectification process.

For example if we take charging of cell phones the adapter of the phone receives 220V AC voltage.

but we know that for charging of phone we need DC voltage .

So rectifier comes into play here .It helps in converting the AC voltage into DC voltage.

Half wave rectifier uses a single diode when compared to other rectifiers.

Therefore the extent of rectification is not so good in case of half wave rectifier as rectification takes place only during the positive cycle of diode as the diode is in forward bias and it conducts .

During negative cycle the diode is in reverse bias so the diode does not conduct so rectification does not take place.

  • circuit diagram

above is the circuit diagram and input output signal of the half wave rectifier

  • COMPONENTS REQUIRED

  1. Multimeter

  2. a capacitor

  3. load resistance

  4. diode

  5. single strand wires

  6. transformer

  7. power supply for transformer

  8. breadboard

  • CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

  1. The diode and other components are connected as shown in the figure above.

  2. After the connections are made power supply is given to the transformer

  3. Rectification takes place and AC voltage gets converted to DC voltage during the positive cycle

  4. During the negative cycle rectification does not take place .

  5. The voltage is measured at the load resistance using a multimeter .

  6. In the video shown below initially we check the voltage without filter circuit . The voltage is found to be around 6V DC . This circuit still has a lot of ripples in it . Ripples is nothing but the AC component present in it .

  7. Output voltage is given by Vdc=vm/pi(3.14). 17/3.14=5.4

  1. Later we add the filter circuit (Capacitor). A capacitor with higher value more is the reduction of ripples . We observe that after we add the capacitor the value of DC voltage increases because the AC ripples gets converted to DC

hence rectification takes place in a half wave rectifier

the link to the video is given below do give a watch !!!1
